Governor Newsom declared September 9, 2025, as California’s 175th Anniversary.  This milestone comes as the United States prepares to mark 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The proclamation celebrates the State’s history of diversity, resilience, and progress, noting that California has become a leader in opportunity and innovation.

“Where we are now, the State that we have become, was not by chance.  We are the result of a uniquely diverse, iterative 175-year social experiment that continues to grow and evolve,” Governor Newsom said.

As we reflect on this milestone, it is also important to recognize the role of the disability community in shaping California’s story.  Historic moments such as the signing of the Lanterman Act, which gave Californians with the developmental disabilities the right to services and supports, and the 504 Sit-In in San Francisco, which advanced civil rights for people with disabilities nationwide, show how advocacy in California has led to lasting change.

The disability community continues to contribute to California’s progress and strength.  As we look to the future, these voices remain central to building a state where everyone can thrive.
